Hi all I hope you can help!

I'm trying out serve-u ftp for windows and I'm having problems connecting to my computer.

The computer (C1) is running both serv-u and Zone Alarm Pro. When I try to connect to (C1) from another computer (C2) connected to the net via a different connection it just wont connect?

Using the same computer (C2) and all the same settings but connecting through the LAN with Cute FTP I can access it fine?

I have included serv-u in the programs and it has full access 'allow connect' local and internet, also 'allow server' local and internet, it is set to 'allow access to all ports and protocols'.

I have included cute ftp which is the ftp client I use to connect to serv-u the same as above.

I really want to be able to give people access to serv-u to share some files and these people wont always have the same IP address each time the log on to the net. Is there a way I can get round this so that everything apart from port 21 and serv-u is accessable to any FTP client?

Does your firewall log any connections/denials when you have trouble accessing the FTP server? Have you tried disabling the firewall to see if it is the problem? Do you know if your ISP filters any inbound traffic (esp. port 21)?

Also, make sure you know what you're getting into with Serv-U. It has had some vulnerabilities in the past, so make sure you're not running an insecure version.

Hi thakns for your reply.

I have been looking at the logs on Zone Alarm and it doesn't seem to be logging attemps to access the computer at all, I guess that the FTP client is just not access the computer that has Serv-U installed.

It is defenatly the firewall, I have tried to access Serv-U when Zone Alarm isn't running and I access the server first time no problem. I have used the port probe facility on and when Zone Alarm is running all the checks come back as reporting all the scanned ports are stealth (including port 21) So my guess is that the FTP client is looking at the IP I specify but it is not seeing the computer because of this stealth? I have looked at all the settings and played with them but to no avail.

I have emailed Zone Labs and waiting to hear if they have a solution but not sure how long that will take?

If any one has any other suggestions please post them and I'll try them out. I really don't want to have to purchase another firewall to do the same thing. I have a small home network and the computer running Serv-U is only really the gateway and doesn't have anything on there that is important so I might get away with having no security on that computer and run Zone Alarm on the others, but I don't really like the idea.

cool I figured it out (eventually)

FYI: In security settings you've got local & internet settings, on the internet settings go to customise then down to 'Allow incoming TCP ports' click this then specify port 21, :) simple when you know how, just took a whie to find it.
