Hello all,

I am creating a script for my backups and part of this script uses zip to compress certain directories. During the run of some direcotries I get a standard error which tells me that the file size limit has exceeded. Does anyone know what is the max file size of a zip file? Thanks for you help.

It's not the zip file's size, it's a limit placed on users (on my Redhat 9'er it's set in /etc/security/limits.conf). You can set a hard and soft filesize limit there.

Also look at 'ulimit'.

I also have Redhat 9. I looked in the etc/security/limits.conf but there is nothing running. And besides I am running this using the root user. Would there be a limit on the root user?

Not something I've run into then, sorry. How big is the file when you get the error?

The is about 1.8gigs, the funny thing is that if i remove one of the files from the directory, to make the zip less than 1.8gigs then it zips perfectly fine. So i am guessing that its a limitation within zip itself. How about using tar instead of zip for this operation? Can I tar to a hardrive or is it only to tapes?

Thanks.

It seems there's a 2GB filesize limit with Linux on the 32bit systems. Sounds like that's what you're up against. I found this link:
that was pretty informative on how to get around it. Look for the ability to enable 'LFS' on your distro. Personally, can't say I've ever messed with it, so can't offer much else.
