All our desktops (50+) run Win XP Pro but all our servers are Linux. I've read a lot recently that Novell now offers ZENworks on Linux. Can anyone state if Zenworks installed on a Linux server can provide the necessary desktop management services to the Win XP Pro desktops?

TIA

I don't know about a Zen/linux product, but I can tell you that Zen runs on Netware as well as Windows. Zen does not have to run on win32 in order to manage win32 desktops.

Generally speaking, the workstations get the Information from eDirectory to obtain the policies, applications, etc. It doesn't matter what platform eDir is running on. So Yes, it should work just fine.

Linux agents are not currently avilable from distribution. With out the server agents you can not import workstations into the directory, nor utilize imaging. With out importing workstations, you can not do inventory nor can you do remote control. You will just end up spending a lot of money on an app that can deploy policies (will require network file access to store the policy (M$'s fault, not Novell's)) You will also be able to deploy apps, which will also require file access to pull the app files from the network.

Your buying the user access license for eDir, just use a NetWare server to host the agents until the Linux agents are released.

Marv;
Laugh if you will but sometimes beta is all that is available. And if everyone always waited for production level products to become available... well, we'd still be using MSDOS.

I too have read that Novell HAS Linux based ZENworks servers available but how/where to obtain them is the questions. We have Linux based eDirectory installed and working fine as the authenticator for ALL our XP Pro desktops AND some Linux clients as well. We've been installing the Zenworks clients in all of the XP desktops anticipating the availability of the Linux server component sometime soon.

Please keep up the chatter her and if/when we find it and install it I'll post an update.

Thanks - Bob
