Zabbix in Telecom environment

Has anyone used Zabbix or equivalent in the telecoms environment specifically with IP Office?

I'd like to be more proactive in sorting out potential issues arising on our systems before the customer realises/notices that there is an issue.

Any feedback/ideas on possible network management software applicable to what I want to do would be much appreciated. I have looked on the interwebs and haven't had much luck.

Email alerts tend to be comprehensive enough to catch trunk, handset and voicemail etc issues as they happen, no need for software to be involved
