z-index -whole numbers?

Hi,
Can anyone confirm that the z-index doesn't need to be whole numbers? If I want to do site-wide changes using an editor and I want to add in a DIV tag, with a z-index, can I simply make the z-index number fit in between the previous and next numbers - like 2.5 would fit in between 2 and a 3? Not very clearly expressed- sorry.
