Hello all,

I have been backing up from disk to tape since forever, but am thinking of making the move to disk to disk to tape. I figure this way I can take advantage of disk to disk for increased storage, better performance, etc, while also using my existing tape autoloaders for long term archiving.

I am wondering about how people have this implemented though. For example, would it be a good idea to say maybe do daily differential backups and full weekly backups using disk to disk and then at the end of the month transferring the last full weekly backup to tape as a monthly backup and then store that in archive?

What is your backup implementation with something like this?

Thanks!!

If you're thinking about taking this step why not also investigate the possibilities of D2D with offsite replication. If you are going to go D2D2T I would still keep up a full cycle off offsite backup tapes (if that is what you do a present). It would be too big a business risk to only have ship tapes offsite once a month.
