Hi all,

I have a fairly simple database and everytime one of the users has it open, I cannot modify a report. I get the "You Do Not Have Exclusive Access to the database". I tried to research this on the web but couldn't find a resolution. Any idea? Thanks.

Access is set to require you to have exclusive access to it. In other words when someone has it open, it can not be changed by another user. If you want to make changes, you must ask everyone to exit from it.

Hi

There are two issues:
One is that there is an Exclusive or Shared open mode for Access. To enable concurrent users, this must be set to "Shared" (from Tools >> Options >> Advanced). It appears to me that you have yours set to shared, and this is OK.

Second is to modify a database object (form/report etc) you must be the only person on the system at that time. This appears to be your problem. You will need to ensure that all users are off your system before tyring to make your changes.

To get around this issue, I have a Development version of even small systems, to let me play/develop/debug the database, and then (perdiodically) move this into Production (either by object eg copy indiv reports into Production, or by overwriting Production with the latest Development/Test version).

NOTE THAT IF OVERWRITING THE PRODUCTION VERSION YOU MUST MAKE SURE OF ALL DATA ITEMS - and one day you will probably forget. This issue is addressed by splitting your system into a front-end user interface and a corresponding backend data-only system.

Cheers

Steve
