Yet another stupid question

Hey guys, just a quick question for you. I'm looking at a Gateway G6 400c which is not coming on. Power supply is on, when I plug it in and then I try to press the power button and nothing.

Question is: What is the P8 plug for? It has a purple and black wire. Just wondering, coz it's not plugged into anything.

I believe that extra connector coming off the power supply is for an AT or ATX board. Some of these power supplies which Gateway uses are compatible with AT and ATX boards. You will use main connection or the other.

P8 is a neccessary part of the p8/p9 system the AT motherboard uses, and if you don't plug in the p8(right next to the p9 back to back black) the computer will not post, and all that will come on are some lights and fans.

P8 is also included on some PSU's for newer Intel boards as a more stable (filtered) 12v and 5v supply for the motherboard.
I doubt that this is an AT PSU, with the P8 and P9 plugs...

Well, I found the place to plug it in and it still didn't work. When I press the power button, it feels "squishy." I couldn't get the front cover off without taking absolutely all of the cages out, so I just told her to take it to the Gateway store in Jacksonville. She hasn't come to pick it up yet, but I think I will tell her to do just that, take everything out and see if she can hook anything to the power button. Coz it actually looks like the power button is not hitting onto anything that I can see.

I'm just a simple tech and try not to get too involved!!

gateway system are notorious for the switches being push to hard one too many times...and more than likely that is what you are facing..the switch actually gets shoved out of its retainer, try crossing the two pins on the main board where the power switch plugs in and see if it boots up..if it does then you have a switch problem..

Check the other end of the power switch too - when we get PCs shipped here they often won't power up.

In 9/10 cases it's simply the power jumper has come off the motherboard.
