Hey all,

Please feel free to tear it apart (it's my personal site) ;)

It's not totally completed yet, just looking for look 'n feel feedback.

Hi There

Clean site indeed! Very nice and clean design. Good choice of colors and the grapics are good.

Try validating your website on:
Don't forget to add a doctype declaration to your website, and also try adding a <title>-tag to every page.

Good job!

Regards

Steven

Because I am feeling a bit grumpy this morning and I have a migraine...

[ul]
[li]It doesn't have a DOCTYPE[/li]
[li]It doesn't validate as the fallback "HTML 4.01" DOCTYPE[/li]
[li]Alt attributes are a good idea. You missed them out in a alot of places[/li]
[li]Title attributes can be useful too[/li]

Thanks for your feedback guys...

I was kinda in a rush to get it launched and forgot to stick those elements in my page template code. Thanks for pointing them out.

I actually haven't used the validator before. Funny... I've been doing web stuff for 'bout 5 years or so :p That'll keep me busy for a while...

It's kinda like writing a C# windows app and then running FXCop on it :)

Funny - one guy likes the colors, the other guy thinks they're on the bland side.

Ah well - can't keep everyone happy :D

Like the look, echo what the other guys say about validation and including a <title> element. I think the choice of colours is OK, to work as a background for visually richer content. The current fashion for tiny text is a pet hate of mine, but it can be resized in FF without breaking anything, so I'll let you off.

I think most people have grown accustomed to clickable buttons changing colour when you mouseover them. It's probably sensible not to buck this trend, especially when your non-clickable titles look a bit like buttons too. You can use the technique at to do it with CSS.

You should consider adding an "About" page, to tell people who/what/where you are. Of course, if the site is really only "a place to write things that I learn so I don't lose them", you don't need this; but the fact that you're putting this on the internet implies that you want other people to read it.

On the Contact page, make the text entry boxes a bit bigger, the one for the message body is particularly tiny. Submitting the contact form with nothing in it results in a run-time error screen. You need to deal with this more gracefully, but maybe the script isn't working yet anyway (I didn't try sending a proper message).

Good work overall, once you've fixed it up under the hood.

I thought it looks pretty good.

however the very first thing i though when the site came up was; "wonder where this theme came from" It looks mass produced, or at least, it looks like something that would have some from someone that makes mass produced themes.

in short, to me it lacks a unique feeling.

I think it looks really professional. I will not repeat what other guys said (I could agree with most of it. When I first look at your page and I don't know you or what your site is about, it takes me a couple of seconds to figure that out which is too long. One of the reasons in my opinion is that text "internet developer" and "application programmer" is tiny and low in contrast so it takes a while to notice it. You could try to put it in the same orange color you used for bullet points. // I thought about what SimalatedFun said and tried to think what I would do to "jazz it up". When I look at your page I think sleek, modern, cold, metallic ect. I don't know if you have seen "furry tea cup" by Rene Magritte. But I would add a "furry" computer mouse. I'd use a fur texture (arctic fox seems like a good one) and cover a computer mouse with it. So, you would have two completely different textures cold and warm, metallic and soft. Hmm... perhaps it sounds a bit crazy bit people would remember your page that's for sure.

You're a web designer ... and that's your personal site ... just outta curiosity, how come u still designed with a whack of tables, rather than jumping on the CSS bandwagon? :p

On the other hand, and this is just a general comment ... but where can you actually find an original design layout these days? Strip some graphics, remove the color, and you have a basic one / two / three + column layout ... which probably explains why I'm having a bugger of a time coming up with a design for my own site that isn't the same as everyone elses .... blah. :p

Chris - I thought about sticking an "About" page up... Your argument convinced me to add one to the project - and I'll be doing that once I get some time (damn work) ;)

Jazz88 - You're absolutely correct: A couple seconds to figure out what the site is is way too long. I'll fiddle with the "Internet Developer | Application Programmer" to make it more prominent.

Grtammi - Funny you should mention the CSS thing - I was actually considering doing it that way (and I still mean to), but I wanted to get the page up as fast as possible (I did it in a couple hours - once the design was done mind you). As for
You're a web designer...
I would say no... There's a fairly large distinction in my mind between a web designer and a web developer: I don't have much of an art background, mainly engineering. I can write code for a site (I do all my stuff in C# at the moment) like an artist can draw a characiture (in other words, with a fair amount of ease), but when it comes to the design stuff... Bleh :p

... Guess that's way my "design" doesn't look too "original" (Gotta work on that :)) :p

GUJUm0deL - Thanks for the brief, yet positive feedback :)

hey, i never said it was a BAD design. :) I just thought it looked like a theme a hosting reseller gives to resellers to help sell the hosting.

for example, very generic and nothing to that says, "Hey i'm my own company and i have something great to offer you". Being professional doesn't mean it has to lack personality.

BUT, i feel your pain. I'm a programmer with moderate design ability also.

... funny, you just described MY personal website...

wow ... first time I ever got quoted twice in a post! :)

web designer, web developer ... yep, two different things, and I did mean the latter one, cuz I fall into the same category as both yourself and SimulatedFun.

I have 3 steps I follow when building a website:

1) generate the XHTML valid markup for the structure layer.
2) call my graphic design friends to draw me up a nice layout, since I have a difficult time drawing a straight line. :p
3) chop their layout into what I need it to do for the website, and create the CSS presentation layer.

Oh wait, guess there's a 4th thing too ... give credit where credit is due ... I always make a mention to the personal copyright of the image belonging to the designer, and NOT the company that it was used for ... a creative commons type thing, ya know?

*wipes head* whew! too much thinking for 8:00am!

I had one more thing I wanted to mention ... I think a textured background on the page would work great to make your content jump out ... right now, it seems to just "sit" on the page. Have a look at the bg at for an example.
