I have a Fujitsu T4020 laptop and can't for the life of me to get any sound going in or out of iPMP.

The soundcard is a SigmaTel if that helps.

I've checked all the other forums and everyone seems to have solved the problem. Should I be looking at a USB set?

First the obvious : is the soundcard the default sound device in windows? Did you read the manuals?
Do you have the mic and speaker icons in iPMP?

Check if the iClarity server is started: open a DOS box and type "tasklist /svc" or just "tasklist"
Check if the voip ports are not used by another app : open a DOS box ant type "netstat -ona" you get a list of open ports
Check the firewall settings
Check the virus software settings ( latest versions can also block a amount of ports )
run the sysmonitor tool and select the H323 filter, check if there are no errors
start the ipmp with a startup parameter called -debug, you can add the parameter in the shortcut, then you get a extra menu option in iPMP were you can monitor all events and errors in iPMP
