I am relatively new to Report Writing in Cognos 8.3. I cannot find anywhere a simple mechanical process to build a Year to Date, Quarter to Date and Month to Date column for a report. I typically compare the current year to the previous year. For example....for June 2008, I would like to show YTD up to June. I put the following filters:
YEAR >2006
MONTH <= 6
The YTD column works great...it shows me YTD 2008 up to June and 2007 up to June.
In my Fiscal year dimension, I can use Quarter and Month. This is where it gets dicey....the result will show BOTH quarters (1 and 2) while I only want to se 2. And with the month, it shows ALL 6 months while I want to see only month 6. How can I get rid of Quarter 1 and months 1 to 5?

You do not state where are you working on. The technical solution would depend upon whether this is a relational source or Cube/DMR and if you want all data to be shown in one report object (list?)

For a relational source you can define calculations that involve CASE constructs biased against the current_date. Or define a union query which will work very nicely when you want to use a crosstab..
