My brother (middle manager) is wondering if it is possible to determine if a co-worker is logging into Yahoo webmail (belonging to other co-workers) from several worksites, and viewing the messages. Local IT just shrugged their shoulders and said they really don't have time to monitor traffic for stuff like, so it's doubtful that their Netopia is configured to provide the reports his team needs.

Does Yahoo maintain any sort of logs that documents when a webmail account is accessed and from what IP address?

I told him I really didn't know, not having much experience with it, but would post a question here and hope that folks who know more could respond.

Yes, but likely only the public IP, so it would likely show just the gateway.

And it would take a subpoena to get the info.

If you can't track the data internally, you're SOL.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

If the IT department won't do it, then your brother needs to escalate the issue.

Thanks, 58sniper. That's pretty much what I thought, but tracking network activity isn't my cup o' tea.

Why does it even matter if it's not CORPORATE mail that someone is looking at. That's petty employee sniping and they shouldn't be playing around on yahoo mail at work anyway UNLESS it's for some corporate purpose.

I think IT should thumb their nose at this, again, UNLESS it's a corporate function that their using Yahoo mail for. Which presents another question - WHY yahoo mail????

If they are able to logon to that persons yahoo mail it is time the person changed their password and not write it down so other people can access it.

^^^^ Another good point which should be obvious to most people but apparently is not with the users in that office.

The OP never came back and said WHY people were using Yahoo mail in the office - whether it was personal or business.

goombawaho, it's immaterial to me WHY people (regardless of who they might happen to be) were using Yahoo mail in the office. That company obviously has a reason for it--maybe they want webmail features and don't have Exchange servers @ their organization to use OWA?--whether corporate or otherwise. I don't provide IT for them, so I really don't care what the rationale might be :)

My actual question was "Does Yahoo maintain any sort of logs that documents when a webmail account is accessed and from what IP address?" 58sniper provided the "second opinion" response that my brother was seeking.

I understood both the question and the answer. However, I think you (your brother) should go "above and beyond" and start asking valid questions that might be helpful to the organization such as:

1. Why are you using Hotmail at a business?? If it's for company business purposes, that's a problem.

2. If it's NOT for business purposes, why are they allowing their employees to piddle around at work using their Yahoo accounts - i.e. no internet policy in place.

3. Why is local IT choosing to ignore the situation (shrugging their shoulders)?? Either they're a bunch of do-nothings or they don't have any power to change things or they're way understaffed.

Do you see how I'm coming at this problem now???

It's the old story that goes like this (taken from a movie but I can't remember which one).
A man walks up to another man with a dog and asks, "does your dog bite?" The man with the dog says, "no". So, the guy reaches down to pet the dog and it bites him.

He says, "I thought you said your dog didn't bite".

Man with dog says "that's not my dog".

Yes - the Pink Panther. Voice of Mr. Burns: HILARIOUS

And thanks to 58sniper for appreciating my analysis. I wasn't just trying to be a curmudgeon - though I'm mighty good at it!!

Stars to 58sniper and goombawaho for an excellent discourse on this issue. I appreciate the input and think neither of you are curmudgeons :)
