Yahoo search enging and Yahoo messenger

Do I need to have Yahoo as a search engine on my pc in order to use Yahoo messenger? Since downloading Yahoo, my pc has become very slow and sometimes stops responding. I am a "beginner" so I apologise if this thread is being posted in the wrong area. Thank you.
