Hi - So ... What's New at Yahoo!?
In a press release dated 12/23/02 Yahoo! announced that it will purchase the Crawler Based Search Engine Inktomi for approximately $235 million. Inktomi currently provides its' data to: Overture, HotBot, MSN, About & Looksmart and lists 2 Billion+ websites. Yahoo is still using Google's data as its' primary search results, which lists 2.4 Billion webpages. Inktomi was founded in 1996, originating as an experimental search engine at U.C. Berkeley. Yahoo opened in 1994 and is the Internet's Oldest Directory.
How will this effect your website listing on Yahoo!?
Ultimately, it is anticipated that Yahoo will provide a combination of the Google and Inktomi databases "turning Yahoo! into a metasearch engine. However, Yahoo! may also decide to drop Google in favor of Inktomi" says Pandia Search World. As of October 2002, Yahoo switched to using Googles' data for their primary search results, their directory results being available via their categorical hierarchy.
In terms of search results, it is my opinion that Google's algorithm and page ranking system provides a more relevant data collection upon a search than Inktomi. But it is critical that your site is crawled by Inktomi's spider to get a decent listing with Overture, HotBot, MSN, About & Looksmart and now most likely this will include Yahoo!
But ... How do you get Inktomi to crawl through your website?
1) Let the crawler naturally find your site (most recommended);
2) Pay 1st Url $39, 2-1000 URLs each $25 per year to Market Leap to have the spider crawl through your site (2nd choice). It is not confirmed, but seems that if you pay for the crawler to spider one page, that will be the only page it crawls. If the spider finds your site naturally, you may have the luxury of getting all your pages indexed for free.

Their search technology provides listings from Google, FAST, Ask Jeeves and Inktomi. Sponsored links by Overture, FindWhat, Sprinks and ah-ha. Directory Listings from About, LookSmart and The Open Directory Project. They provide their Meta Search Results to: Dog Pile, Excite, Metacrawler and NBCi.
