Yahoo Mail notifier's mysterious "9"

For some reason, my Yahoo Mail notifier keeps appearing showing the number "9". Sometimes there are some new emails, sometimes there are none. But the main thing is, there doesn't seem to be any logical connection to how many new emails are in my mailbox. When I delete all new emails, the number turns to zero, but the next time I look, that mysterious number 9 is back. Any ideas on how to correct this?
