got a fresh rebuilt Dell Y2k box (sp-4+, IE6, used as a file server) connected to a Dlink wireless router via ethernet. got a Dell laptop (centrino) connected wirelessly to the router. router also brings in Internet via wan port. internet works just fine at all times & configurations. dlink router is set to 192.168.1.1 & DHCP turned on.

i've setup up machines both ways>
1. each machine set to own ip 192.168.1.2/3, subnet 255..,
gateway 192.168.1.1, dns 4.2.2.2
2 automatic on ip & dns

both machines have drives shared. can ping (in static 192.168.1/2/3 and in dhcp 192.168.1/100/101) each other machine from either machine.

i can't browse the network for the other machine. xp doesn't show any drives when i click on network. it say I don't have privledges to access the newtwork, contact admin??? i have no security or lock-down on the Y2k(server) machine that i'm trying to access. when i try to browse from the Y2k machine is see both machines in network, but when i click on the xp machine it say network resources not available.

i know the wireless & wired network is working just fine, can surf & ping. the y2k machine logs on with an acct. being an admin. not sure the status of the type of acct the xp-pro logs on. would that matter? any ideas? i'm thinking the issue is on the xp laptop, but not sure where to look. what about the dhcp on the router turned on or off? how does that interact with the 2 machine whether the are static or dynamic? what happens when a router is set dhcp, but the clients are set with IP...what about the other way around?

thanks,
bill
