1. Take query load from operational systems
2. Consolidate information from various sources to one platform
3. Create environment for stashing historical information, not contained in OLTP systems.
4. De-normalize information to able to speed up reporting on large and complex data
5. Create one homogeneous source to draw information from, avoiding conflicting information sources (ad-hoc queries by different users with different company rules and interpretations)

You can also add:

To conform field names to business rules for end users to understand it easily. Imagine giving a fieldname called LDGRJULTOT (Ledger - July Total) to an end user.

The design of the data warehouse is optimized for data analysis use (OLAP) not for recording transactions (OLTP).

Just imagine several users running a complex query to retrieve details for analysis while several users are attempting to record transactions.

It allows a structured way to analyze past data for
trending - seeing patterns to allow future predictions

ie
what products are selling well?
what products are not selling at all?
are production prices rising?
was the marketing campaign successful in selling more of a product>
