I have a Phaser 850 that appears to have a bad Y-axis encoder disk, possibly due to a technician accidentally damaging the surface of the disk while changing the sensor.

Before, the Y-axis could not find home. Now, neither the old sensor nor the replacement sensor can read the encoder disk at all. I think he just used his fingers to move the encoder disk from one sensor to another.

I see there's a list of available tools from Xerox for this printer -- including a Y-axis encoder disk spacer tool (part#003-1489-00). What, exactly is this tool for?

I'd greatly appreciate any information. I'll be checking this thread throughout Feb 3 into Feb 4, at least.

Sincerely,
Steve

The y axis encoder tool is nothing more than a spacer that is machined so that is sits on the drum shaft so that you can position the encoder against it when positioning it. The idea of the tool is to position the disk exactly center of the sensor, so that neither side rubs against the sensor which could cause false 05 series errors. The encoder can be positioned without the tool as long as you ensure it rides center line of the sensor.
