Hi all,
I need help or more information on Why I can't run the configuration and system admin files from the system console on xwindows, while I can run it from my desktop without any problems???

MKMA

Hello,
Some of the tools in xwindows may leave lock files. I had to deal with one such file on a customer that could not run an account manager window. The lock file was found in the users directory.
good luck! Life is good!, live it?

OK, now we r moving in the right direction.
I have exactly the same problem that your customer had of not able to open the account manager or and Application Manager on XWindows..
But, where is that lock file???
I couldn't find any in the /usr directory nor under my usr directory...
and, Does root has a lock file??

Waiting......

I have another question...
How can I make my host's name appear on the login banner of XWindows.....this time on an OpenVMS system
I looked for the file that have the setup for the local host name, and I found that the greetings is written as follows..
"Welcome to %localhost%"

but it only showc "Welcome to" on the banner

Am I missing something???

Eshta!!

He he.. Welcome to the frustrating world of "AHHH... UUHHGG I know this must be it!"

But always be carefull, keep in mind this!
"maybe that's not it!"

My fault for sayin users dir. It is actually:
/etc/.AM_is_running.

Good Luck!
Life is good!, live it?

OK, here we go again...

I have problems accessing the manager tools from xwindown banner, when ever I click on the application manager box it gives me the following error..

File Manager Open Directory Error
Invalid folder specification, /usr/var/dt/appconfig/appmanager/name-hostname-0

Any suggestions???

You c!. "That wasn't the problem."
Yet, we did not see this new message posted before.
"Invalid folder specification"

Could you do a fverify on the following subsets. Before that you might whant to find out which ones you have installed..

setld -i "Look for the ones bellow"
/usr/lbin/fverify -n "subset name"

_Subset_ _Description_
OSFCDEAPPS510 CDE Additional Applications (Window)
OSFCDEDEV510 CDE Software Development and Progra)
OSFCDEDT510 CDE Desktop Environment (Windowing )
OSFCDEMAIL510 CDE Mail Interface (Mail Applicatio)
OSFCDEMANOP510 CDE Development (Referen)
OSFCDEMANOS510 Ref Pages: CDE Admin/User (Referenc)
OSFCDEMIN510 CDE Minimum Runtime Environment (Wi)

If you notice any errors in the on-screen log. See the man pages on fverify to determin the "FIX ALL" parameter.
L8ter!

Well,
Thanx for all your help guys, but I got the solution fron another guy.....

The problem was originally caused by changing anything in the network (Which I did by changing the name of the server)
and this corrupts the files of the CDE X-Windown sessions.

All that you need to do is to delete the directory .dt
which is placed in the user's home directory, and then let the user logout and login again, this will create a new configuration files and directory (.dt) in his home directory, and he will be able to use the full capabilities of the CDE icons..

NOTE: if the user has settings under the $HOME/.dt directory, do not delete that directory before you move these files somewhere else and then restore it under his new .dt directory..
