Hi all unix fundi's.

Perhaps you can help me with this one...

I am using Symantec VPN software on a laptop to give a user remote access to our LAN. When the user connects to the LAN via the VPN, he has full access to ping any system. Our network is mostly Micro$oft, but we have one Unix server.

The user needs to be able to access the unix server via the VPN using XVision software. This works fine locally...but I cannot get the laptop to ping the IP address of the Unix server, using the VPN. (Which is on the same IP range as the rest of the LAN.)

Is there perhaps a protocol that is needed or a port opened on the firewall.

thanx,

Julian

The firewall is not your problem (unluse you have a firewall between the unix box and the rest of the network). The VPN makes the firewall transparent to the client.

I'm not sure what protocol XVision uses, it is possible that it uses something wierd that can't be packed through your VPN. But I doubt it.

I am guessing a routing issue. Obviously, the VPN client has a route to your network, as you can ping other hosts on the same subnet. But does your Unix box have a route to the VPN client that goes through the VPN? Doesn't do any good to ping a host if the host doesn't know how to reply. Try a ping from the Unix box to the VPN client.

Hi mhkwood,

Thanx for the info. I think that you are on track...I contacted the Unix server's support group to find out what the default gateway is of the Unix box...they told me that it does not have a default gateway...this may be preventing the Unix box from finding a route back!

Thanx,

Julian
