xsetroot / .Xdefaults

I'd like to set the background color of the desktop from the .Xdefaults file or by using xsetroot from .xinitrc. However, I've tried both approaches to no avail. I've tried the following

xsetroot -solid black
xsetroot -grey
xsetroot -bg black
xsetroot -fg black

without any effect.
