My WinXPPro usually booted straight into my account (I was the sole user). Then I added two other user accounts. For some reason, when the rig boots now, the first screen shows no user name and produces an "error" msg. which when cancelled leads to the main user choice screen. I am wondering if someone else might have created a "ghost" account (it's possible...the computer is a remote). How do I get the puter to boot straight to the user choices screen without interruption? NEED HELP! IT'S MESSING UP MY USER'S PERMISSIONS! I want that reference removed. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Hi, define your "default user" and "default password" in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Hope this helps. Please let me know if this resolve your issue

Start, Run, control userpasswords2
Uncheck the first box: 'Users must enter a username and password....' and click Apply.
XP will prompt for the username and password to use for autologon. Specify these and hit the OK button.

Sounds like the error message(?) may be caused by the fact that you still have an automatic login entry for that original username you had before increasing the number of users.

Start, Run, control userpasswords2
Check (tick it) the first box: "Users must enter a username and password"

See if undoing the first article below helps?
