XPath function substring

I work in an organisation that still uses MSXML version 2.5.
I need to use the function substring (XPath) in a stylesheet. What I cannot find in any documentation is if this is supported from version 3.0 on or that is should also be possible with version 2.5 (or 2.6).
Can anyone confirm or deny that I need MSXML version 3.0 to use the function substring?
