xpath 1.0 upper-case() function?

As far as I can tell, xpath 1.0 does not support the upper-case function(). Is the translate function the only work-around?

translate(mytext,'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz','ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ')

I hope there is a more concise way.
