I have an XP Pro workgroup setup for 2 PC's connecting through a wireless access point. 1 of the PC's has ICS enabled. I can ping between both machines using either IP or name ,ping the access point, and ping the Network card connecting to Broadband. I can access the internet from the ICS host Pc, but not from the ICS client. The other thing is that i cannot search for the other PC or connect to shared folders from either PC. What could be causing these problems? By the way, i am not using the XP firewall, but Zone Alarm.

ICS host Pc
Network card 1 connected to broad band with ICS installed.
Network card 2 connecting to WAP
Ip address 192.168.0.1
WAP Ip 192.168.0.155 static ip address
255.255.255.0
Host File modified with '192.168.0.34(tab)(PC NAME).MSHOME.NET' as per MS knowledge base article Q309642

PC 2 ICS client
IP address 192.168.0.34 static address
255.255.255.0
Default GW 192.168.0.1
DNS 192.168.0.1
DNS suffix MSHOME.NET

Add an inexpensive switch.
ICS Host machine and AP are connected to the switch.

It is possible to reconfigure this if the AP supports client mode. The ICS Host would have the broadband connection, and a wireless adapter in Ad Hoc mode. The AP would be on PC2 in client mode.

But as you have it configured I just do not see a way to make it work without a switch.

Thanks for that, are you saying use a hub in the first solution? That sounds nice and easy. What does the switch change?

My AP has Ad Hoc mode or Infrastructure. What is client mode on the AP?

You could use a hub, but a 4 port switch is US$15. A switch is simply faster and more efficient than a hub as you remove the collision domain.

The AP in client mode makes it an expensive wireless adapter essentially. Not all AP's support the range of possibilities: AP, Bridge, Client, Repeater.

Best,
Bill
