When I go to Microsoft's XP update page, it will not update my computer, giving me an 0x800700B6 error.

What is this and how do I cure it?

Thanks!

The value for the CSDVersion in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
needs to be changed to 0. If you are comfortable editing the registry,
follow the instructions below.
1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. In the Open box type regedit and click "OK."
3. Browse in the left frame to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
4. In the right frame you will see the key CSDVersion. Double click this key.
5. Change the value to 0 and click "OK."
6. Restart the computer.

Thanks bcastner. I also found that solution in the KB but I am certainly not comfortable in changing the registry. I was hoping maybe Microsoft would provide a better answer than what they did!

Open notepad and copy/paste the below as csd_fix.reg

****** begin copy/paste below this line
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows]
"CSDVersion"=dword:00000000

****** end copy/paste above this line.

Double click the file to merge the contents into the registry. Reboot and try Windows Update again.\

I should note that this normally indicates an issue with your Service Pack 1 installation, and it should be reinstalled or you should upgrade to Service Pack 2.

OK, you talked me in to it and I did it and it worked. The only problem I had was that I had to reboot my machine three times before the Microsoft update site realized that I no longer had SP1 on my machine!

Another Microsoft Miracle!
