I have touched this problem before but never resolved. 8 out of 10 times (10 out of 10 at the moment)XP has to go through the Safe mode run before it launches to Desktop. I have replaced HD with new, got rid of all USB devices, and time and again rebuilt XP partitions. (I have three separate installations in 3 partitions). This is, I think, a big clue - now and again, after a successful launch from Safe mode, this message/window appears:

One of the files containing the system registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternative copy. The recovery was successful.

I only rebuilt this partition a couple of weeks ago and am amazed if the registry has got corrupted so soon. Any advice appreciated.

When you mention rebuild is that a clean install and format or just a repair install, I am just trying to remove a corrupted profile from the equation?

"has to go through the Safe mode run before it launches to Desktop", when did this start happening, not during XP Setup, I assume, so what are you installing last thing before it(the fault) occurs?

Do us also a favor (if Linney's post did not alleviate the problem) and list the specs of the PC that you are running on... I have a notion that the PSU may be underpowered or borderline...

basically the components and how many (HDD and ODD), what GFX card, CPU, how much RAM, all that is pertinent (wattage of PSU and how old it is), etc...
