Basically, WinXP enhances the file system further by incorporating a feature that monitors files accessed during the boot process. In the background, WinXP will move these files to the front of the hard drive where access speeds are the fastest. This also helps eliminate fragmentation of these files. The following are key benefits of WinXP over Win2K:
- faster boot times (in most cases)
- better compatibility with 16-bit processes
- better compatibility with games that run fine in Win98 or WinME
- snazzy new look to the desktop!
- better compatibility/stability with newer hardware (I didn't have to install a single driver for any hardware when installing WinXP on my laptop, and it's 3 years old!)
The only thing you really need to be aware of is that not everyone has had the same experience with WinXP. I've found that "most" users I've talked with are more satisified with WinXP after making the jump from Win2K. I personally have never had a problem. I was even able to run and old Win95 16-bit game without any trouble or hacks!
