My company has upgraded about 30 computers from Windows 2K pro to Windows XP pro.

I use a product called Hyena to manage a lot of different functions on the network. For instance, I can monitor running processes that I'd normally have got to the computer and look at in Task Manager.

On the computers that was updated from 2K Pro, I can no longer get remote access to the registry. A computer where we reformatted the hard drive and installed XP from scratch works fine. All the functions are visible.

I've compared policies, Registry Security, etc. between the computers where it doesn't work to one that does work and there's no obvious difference.

Any ideas to resolve this would be appreciated.

(Paraphrasing David Woodward from the Newsgroups

The resolution to this problems is to log in to the system as the local Administrator and grant "LOCAL SERVICE" read permissions to the following registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\Winreg

Once the LOCAL SERVICE has read access to this key all of the remote management and remote registry editing features work correctly.

There also is a Service that covers Remote Registry.

Thank you very much, that resolved the issue!

Any idea why this only occurs if the OS was upgraded from 2K to XP but not on a clean xP build?
