XP Unattended Install

Has anyone created and used an unattended install (i.e. answer file) for Windows XP Pro? It looks like there are a few ways to go about this. I need to install XP on about 400 machines.

Thanks for any help.

I assume you understand the basics and have the XP Resource Kit. Here's a page from the online version of the reskit docs:


As you can see, Unattend.txt is a sample answer file included in the reskit as a starting point.

This is a fairly advanced topic - too much so to cover here. If you don't have the resource kit you should get it.

Personally, I haven't done unattended installs since NT 4, and so I haven't kept up on all of it.

If you are a Microsoft OEM, you can view several related Online Seminars at - but you must be prequalifed in the System Builder program to gain entrance to this web site.
