We are running a scanstate to grab end users data so we can deploy and upgrade OS to their machine and then have the ability to loadstate the contents obtained by the scanstate. We have done 22 machines successfully and have had three NOT capture the complete data. We have since been reviewing the scanned data with a MIG Viewer to ensure all data is captured prior to deploying the new OS.

Here is our scanstate syntex:

scanstate G:\USMTstore\users\[username]\ /i:migdocs.xml /i:migapp.xml /i:miguser.xml /vsc /v:13 /c /o /l:scan.log /ue:*\* /ui:hiddencompany\[username]

After these few that have not captured all the data we are a bit hesitant to trust the .MIG utility.

Any ideas why we are not capturing all data all the time

Tom

First, you shouldn't be specifying both MigUser.xml and MigDocs.xml in the same command. Both migration files backup overlapping files and settings, which can cause duplication and other issues. See this link.

Second, are you absolutely certain the scanstate command is being run with admin rights every time? I assume you would know this right away if the *.mig file didn't show up in the backup location.

Another thing to keep in mind is that USMT is never going to be 100% reliable, or at least, hasn't been in my experience. WMI corruption in Windows, for example, can cause issues. You should use usmtutils.exe to verify the contents of the migration store file. More info about that here.
