My DSL Ethernet modem recently died so I am presently stuck using a USB modem for a few months until I move and get FIOS. Anyway, I'm trying to set up my XP desktop to use ICS to feed a wireless access point that connects to a Vista laptop. Everything appears to set up fine--the desktop properly sets up the Ethernet IP address and the laptop, set to auto, properly sets up its IP address to one in the correct subnet. On the laptop, the network map shows everything as being connected to the internet, but I am not able to connect. I can transfer files just fine between the machines. Thinking that the access point may have been a point of failure, I connected the two machines directly using a crossover cable to the same effect. Once in a great while, I will get a webpage to be displayed in the browser but clicking any links from it are unsuccessful as well as refreshing the page. I tend to think that the network didn't set up correctly for whatever reason so i tried using the network setup wizard in XP. After all that appeared to look good, I then tried the last option which would allow me to setup the configuration on the clients via floppy. When I tried to do this on the Vista laptop, it fails.

Any ideas?

Do you have any firewalling that is interfering with Internet access? Some virus scanners have hidden firewalling components too.

Schtek, appreciate the link but I've seen this page already. I have setup everything according to their instructions.

I have Zonealarm and have set the IP addresses of each side of the network in the Trusted Zone so everything should work. If it wasn't, I don't think I'd be able to share files. I use AVG (free version) and don't believe it has any hidden firewall elements.

Nevertheless it might be worth uninstalling ZoneAlarm (Disabling is never enough) for testing purposes. If you do go down that path make sure any Services like VsMon are removed from the machine too.

A quickie test might be to see how Safe Mode With Networking handles the situation.

AVG free does not have any hidden firewalling in it.

Thanks linney.

Zonealarm was the culprit. As it turns out the free version of Zonealarm is incompatible with ICS. I uninstalled as you suggested and just used the Windows Firewall, albeit just briefly, and everything worked fine. I found another free firewall program, Comodo Firewall Pro and installed it on both PCs and everything is working fine.

Thanks for responding and helping me along.
