Ok. I apologize. I was duped. I let a spyware program into my computer. I have learned my lesson. I now have a problem I need help with. I have read all the posts on here (very intelligent people here, WOW) but nothing is working and I am trying very hard for a fresh re-install of XP. HELP. I will describe what has happened up to this point (after discovering the spyware program and not being able to connect to the net)
Specs
xp pro
amd 1.3
1g ram
After noticing the spyware (it multiplied very rapidly) I used BPS Spyware Remover. It found 23 items. I cleaned them out. I then scanned with Norton 2005 and it found nothing. I then read about 50 threads on what may be wrong. I tried to ping my computer and it worked. I tried to ping yahoo both by IP# and by name and it did not work. I ran the netdiag /test:winsock and discovered I had a corupted winsock file. I copied the winsock from a similar computer running XP and replaced them. Rebooted. Same thing is happening. I then disabled all network connections and reinstalled the TCP/IP protocol and before rebooting I replaced the winsock files again. I then rebooted. Same thing. I then spent another 4 hours reading more posts and found that alot of similar occurences from people who removed spyware, but found nothing different to try. I have checked the winsock file and all is well. I have called my ISP and they designated a proxy server (i dont know why because it worked without it) but it still didn't work. I treid installing explorer again. Nothing. I installed netscape, nothing. I reinstalled xp. Nothing. I have thoroughly searched program files and found nothing that shouldn't be there. I have disabled almost all startup items but nothing helps. I have searched ebay for a magic wand, none there. What else should I do before the dynamite?

My problem is somewhat similar, but very different...i think...Trying to install AOL on a friend's computer...When AOL tries to add network protocols, it fails...when I try to add manually, windows gives error message that required files are missing...all we've got are the recovery CD's (that format the HD, so that's a poor solution as far as i'm concerned)...I also have a similar problem when trying to install "Simple tcp/ip" from the add/remove windows components...

help! ;)

shiji0079,

See (at the bottom) the notes on rebuilding the TCP/IP services stack under XP in faq779-4625
