I have a new laptop that will not connect to a 2003 server. The server can't ping the IP address assigned to the laptop but the laptop can ping the server and all other address on the network. I have other XP PCs on the network and no problems from them. I even took a PC down and put its IP address on the laptop and it still didn't work.

This laptop has XP Professional, right?

The pinging issue is likely due to the laptop running XP's firewall which is not returning a response to the server.

Any kind of PRE-Installed Firewalls? eg norton blocking an IP/IP Range?

I had something similar with one of our systems. It turned out one of the many antivirus software products was causing a problem.

Try turning off all 3rd party services and see if the problem still exists.

Here is how:
On your windows xp system and logged in as administrator

click start>run
type: msconfig
select the services tab
check the box to Hide all Microsoft services
select disable all
select apply
----
The system will reboot. Log in once again and if you can finally connect to the server then you'll need to validate which service is causing the problem.
----
Keep in touch.

What is the IP of the server and what is the IP of the PC? Also, their subnet masks?

Is this laptop trying to connect to a domain? Try adding the laptop to a Workgroup. Reboot if need be. Then try adding the laptop to the domain.

If that doesn't work, what kind of messages are you getting? Anything in the event logs?

No other machines can ping this laptop, the laptop can only ping the other machines. IP address of the server is 10.0.0.3 and IP address of the Laptop is 10.0.0.19, subnet is 255.255.255.0 for the network and all PC's seem to be functioning fine on it. I haven't tried disabling the 3rd party firewall. I'm unsure if it has it or not, I know Norton was installed on it, so it might be the cause of the problems. If that doesn't work I'll try joining it to a workgroup, although it does currently say Workgroup in the "Workgroup" section.

Do you still have the laptop's address statically assigned or can it grab the address from an available DHCP server? It sounds like either an addressing issue or more likely a firewall issue. It sounds like your laptop is not set up to respond to a ping.

Also, have you tried any other services on the laptop? For example, if you enable the telnet service, can you telnet in or in any other way connect to the laptop.

For what purpose are you trying to get the server to talk to the laptop? (normally I'm trying to go the other way around)

It was the Norton Security Suite. I removed it and connected to the Domain. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
