I have a few laptops in my company that are running XP Prof.

When they are attached to the LAN via cable they can browse okay. However when they are connected to the internet via Modem, they cannot browse, they just get an error "page cannot be displayed", event though they are connected to the

The strange thing is the this only occured when SP1 was installed. The remaining laptops without SP1 are fine.

Has anyone else had this problem? I don't think it's hardware specific because it affecting compaq, acer laptops.

Have you checked to make sure the Internet Properties -> Lan Settings have not changed to use Proxy? I have had this trouble before... don't know why it changes them... admittedly it happens regardless of SP1 on some of my machines.

No, i've disabled all LAN settings, i've even selected only use default dial up connection.

SO, the dial up connection works, but then when you open a URL, it doesn't open? Are you using a VPN connection with PPTP windows XP VPN?
That has been a hassle for our remote users... they have to dial the connection, and then initiate VPN to gain access to network, but when they try to browse, it doesn't work. WHen they disconnect the VPN, though, but keep the dial-up open, they can browse fine...

It's just a dial up to freeserve. I've tried a few other ISP's but same problem.

Interestingly, a chap I knew last year could not access pages, even though he was dialled up on several ISPs. In the end, he called M$ and they walked him through 5 minutes of registry changes, because they said his DUN had become corrupted. Perhaps SP1 does this?
ANyway, I am just gonna have a look at the registry here to see if there are any changes that could be made... you might have a look at the same. Plus, in the meantime, try searching Technet for DUN corruption fixes...

May be it's an nuts question but did you try to see if you could reach net servers by ping (ie :
Code:
ping www.tek-tips.com
) ? Water is not bad as soon as it stays out human body ;-)

I have the same problem with a laptop running XP Pro on an NT Small Business Server 4.5 network and Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0, Service Pack 1. When I try to dial in from home, I couldn't browse, ftp, etc.

I've found that if you go to the Control Panel in Classic View and open the WSP Client window (WinSock Proxy Client), my system was configured to use my network server for proxy updates. Uncheck both boxes here, save, reboot, and your system should be able to dial in and browse the web. I still need to take my laptop into work to see if the network connection still works.

Sounds strangely like a virus...disable dialup...(in various ways)...couldn't be, right?

It's not a virus i've chacked the systems. Also it does only occur when SP1 for WinXP is installed. Anyway i will try gaNTuser's advice.

This is really wierd.

IF you disable the XP firewall it will solve all your problems Hope This Helps Solve Your Problem
