For years I've been using the following as a scheduled task to shut down Windows9x machines:
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindows

Does anyone know the command sequence to do the same thing in WindowsXp Professional?

Thanks

wilbrian

Windows XP has an actual shutdown command which can be launched from a command prompt — and which, therefore, can also be launched from a shortcut. To see all available options for this command, click Start, click Run, and type:

shutdown /?

For a shortcut to RESTART Windows XP:
SHUTDOWN -r -t 01

For a shortcut to SHUT DOWN Windows XP:
SHUTDOWN -s -t 01

Excellent!

Works with XP Home also.

Thanks jsauce. The only thing is... this command does not turn off the computer. Is there a way to do that too??
