I recently had to purchase the Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Windows XP Pro. I completely reinstalled from CD and have the following problems: Some downloaded programs (even some from Microsoft) will not install after selecting RUN or even SAVE to hard drive. Saved programs say that the file is corrupt. I download same file to another machine and it runs fine. I also have issues with IE6 pages not displaying properly. Any ideas on the solution?

The fact that a second download of a file to a different machine runs is not of much help in diagnosing the issue. It is still completely possible the original machine had corrupted download sessions.

Are you using any sort of dowload accelerator program on the problematic machine? If so, disable or turn it off and test again. You should also investigate whether there are newer drivers for your network adapter, and apply them if so.

For the IE not displaying pages properly, your description is a little vague. Download and apply this re-registration "fix", reboot and report back:
In addition, download a fresh copy of Sun Java VM and apply it:

Everything was working fine (pages and downloads) until I installed the new Pro. I had downloaded from Microsoft first and started having the problems. Then I reinstalled fresh from the CD they sent and continue to have the problems. Explorer pages sometimes have parts of pictures, text is in the wrong spots, not at all, or code shows up on the page.

I don't use a download program. Would it be worth a try to use one?
I tried the iexplore /rereg and it may have helped some but I am still having issues (parts of pictures & text in wrong places etc). Could it be a graphics card problem? Could it be a corrupt version of XP Pro even though it came from Microsoft?

You do not need a download manager.
The chances of a corrupted XP CD from Microsoft are very slim. The XP installation uses a MD5 has on each file as it is installed to make certain it is a true image.

You should head to the web site of the manufactuer of your video board and update your display adapter drivers.

If you have not yet gone to Windows Update, please do so.

It is not clear if the CD you installed had Service Pack 2 included or not. You want this Service Pack.

To get further information about the error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

If the error occurred after installing a device driver or application, try using Safe Mode and removing the driver or program.

Removing adware & spyware

Will check your computer for spyware and adware.

See if you have any services that are flagging as "Starting" but not actually running.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Windows.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode, will IE display an offline file from the T.I.F. folder, or can you open any allegedly corrupt file even though they may not run and install in this mode ?).

Try another user in case your profile is corrupt.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Thanks for the info. I think the problem is solved. I did a fresh install of XP and then updated a few things at a time and checked for problems. I didn't load the wireless driver update at all and I don't intend to. I believe that was the problem, thanks to your advice. So far so good.
