I recently installed a Windows 2000 Server SP3 and joined many Windows 2000 workstations along with 4 Windows XP Professional workstations. All of the Windows 2000 workstations are staying connected just fine, but the Windows XP Professional workstations are having a problem staying connected to the Windows 2000 Domain and thus the DSL connection. Does anyone have any ideas on what may be happening?

Do the Windows XP machines have Service Pack 1 installed?

If you are unsure run "winver" to quickly check.

Service Pack 1 for Windows XP resolves a lot of networking problems.

xp uses dns as its primary name resolution service and not wins

One way to circumvent this is to not use DHCP on these and instead use static.

Heres an untested option I have found likewise:

XP: Auto disconnects to networks or internet using DHCP is derived from extended periods of inactivity. Valid addressesing will be maintained communications will have issues.

This is run by: Start/Run/Command typing: net config server /autodisconnect:-1

Note that this will keep the network figures for some generations to come =)

If you can, run static ip schemes help avoid this situation.

GL!
