I have an XP professional at home. When I try to install sql server 2000 standard edition, the installation says SQL Server Standard Edition server component is not supported in this Operating System, only the client component. Do I need SQL server profesional edition then? Thanks.

You would need either the developer or evaluation edition of SQL to run on XP (either home or professional). SQL standard needs either 2003, 2000, or NT windows server editions to run the Enterprise or Standard edition.

Hope that helps

You can also run the personal edition, which is on CD 2 of the SQL standard disk set. You can have as many versions of personal edition installed as you have CALs for the main SQL standard server.

There are limitations - no. of users connected, etc, but I have found it extremely useful
