When I log into pc, the desktop appears with the usual icons, after a few seconds it dissapears and then reappears, this happens as long as the machine is on.
 
Can you reproduce this in Safe Mode?

Can you reproduce this in Normal Mode, but with a different user?

It could be a problem with your Display Settings or your Video driver failing?

Don't forget old fashioned causes such as malware infections.
 
just to clarify this a bit, is the screen turning black or are just the icons disappearing (Taskbar aswell)?

Have you run a viral check (malware aswell) on the said PC?

I usually see this behavior tied to the explore.exe process. Malware/Spyware may tied themselves to this process via the winlogon notify registry setting. Run hijackthis to see what services/programs starting durig logon.
