I have xp pro, when the machine is switched on my desktop items dissapear and reapear from the screen, dropping me out each time. I have tried systems restore but it will only allow me to return to the date the problem started. Help, I would even consider a reset to factory settings

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "dropping you out".
Could you perhaps elaborate?
Is Explorer.exe closing unexpectedly? Are you getting sent back to the Welcome screen?
If you boot in Safer Mode (press F8 when machine is booting to get the boot options) does it do the same thing?
Have you added any hardware recently?
