XP Pro workstation mistery

A Windows XP Pro workstation on a Windows2000 network is being a real pain. The problem with it is that freezes up when trying to open more than 1 Word 2000 doc from the network. I suspected there was something wrong with Word, but even though I uninstalled Office 2000 and reinstalled it with SVC pack 3 and also reinstalled XP SVC pack 1 it works for a while and it starts doing same thing again. I suspect there could be something wrong with TCP/IP but I am not sure.
Can anyone give me any idea!?
