Help please, how can I fix this:
Windows XP Pro boot screen starts - then goes to find autocheck and says "skipping" then reboots (loops). I have been in the recovery console and find no help there. If this is unrepairable, how can I enable set to AllowAllPaths to get at the directorys to copy some unbacked up data?

Thanks in advance

You should be able to solve this by copying Autocheck.exe into the C:\Windows\System32\ directory while using the recovery console. See the tip below from:

10242 » When you start Windows XP, you receive 'Autocheck program not found'? (08-Mar-06)

When you start Windows XP, you receive:

Autocheck program not found

This behavior will occur if %SystemRoot%\System32\Autochk.exe is missing or corrupt.

To workaround this problem:

1. Insert the Windows XP installation CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP window appears, close it.

2. Open a CMD.EXE window.

3. Type the following command and press Enter:

echo Y|copy <CD-ROM:>\i386\autochk.exe %WINDIR%\system32

4. Remove the Windows XP installation CD-ROM.

5. Shutdown and restart Windows XP.

NOTE: The Chkdsk.exe tool may incorrectly delete security settings on Windows XP unless it has the latest updates. Visit

Did you try the ChkDsk /r command from the Recovery Console?

Chkdsk requires the file Autochk.exe. If Chkdsk cannot find Autochk in the systemroot\System32 directory, it attempts to locate Autochk on the Windows XP Professional installation CD. If you are using a multiple boot configuration, verify that you are issuing this command from the volume containing Windows XP Professional.

How to add more power to Recovery Console by using Group Policy in Windows XP Professional

Recovery Console will only copy one file at a time, not folders. You might want to look at something like BartPE.

You might be able to make use of BartPE (a mini XP self contained on a bootable CD and run from CD) which includes additional software via plugins.

Thanks for the input, how do I disable the "welcome to windows XP" screen??

Disable the Windows XP Splash Screen

Ever wonder what's going on behind that splash screen? Well, now you can find out!

Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Edit. Edit BOOT.INI. Add "/SOS" right after "/fastdetect" with a space between. The line will look something like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /SOS. When you're finished. The first part, multi(0)..... may not be the same on your machine. Upon restarting, the splash screen will be gone. It can be re-enabled by removing the new switch."

The above is quoted from Doug Knox.

Thanks for all the in but, I cannot GET PAST the splash screen. It displays it then looks for autocheck then reboots. I cannot get to any windows at all, Also, copyin autocheck to the C:WINDOWS\System32 dir doesnt work either.

ANy Ideas before I blow it all away? I would like to copy some data off before I do that however - any Ideas there? Everything I read sez that I HAVE to do something in windows before I can enable set in recovery console. That cant be. What good is recovery console if you cant bypass all windows?

HELP

If you aren't having any success getting the system to boot, then you can copy all of the data off using a Live CD like KNOPPIX or Bart's PE. You generally need an external drive, like a USB or Firewire, but can also copy over the network if your network card is supported and you have another machine on the network that you can connect to. Your CD/DVD will be needed for the Live CD to operate, unless you have two.

If you are not familiar with Linux, Bart's PE is probably easier, but in my experience it doesn't support anywhere near the hardware that KNOPPIX does.

You don't need Windows at all to copy the data off.

autochk.exe not found

As for your other question you can also look at this Registry Key and the values which will give you more access. (Backup before making any changes).

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole]
"SetCommand"=dword:00000001

Using BartPE (or a parallel install of XP) you can access and change the failed XP Registry by loading "Hives", it will only be available for these Keys.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
HKEY_USERS

These two articles in the RegEdit Help are a good explanation of the process.

You could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
