XP PRO Start Button not working

I have user with a laptop running XP pro. All was well until the start button stoped working.

Evey thing else works, he can run programs from icons but when he clicks on the start button nothing not even a beep !

He did tell me he has put a USB mouse on but the laptop was working ok after this was done

Any ideas guys ?

Hi Vaylen,

I'd uninstall the mouse and revert to the previous one, just to see if this makes any difference. I'd also suggest checking the machine for nasties, just to be on the safge side.

Does the 'windows' key work by the way?

My guess is that he moved the "Start Menu" Folder inadvertantly to another folder.

Look under both his user profile directory, and that of All Users. In both places there must be a folder "Start Menu."

You could do a search for it, it is not too hard to slide the folder into another one.

Put it back where it belongs!
