I am looking into modifying the "other places" side bar on a XP Pro SP3 machine. TweakUI is not functioning for me. gpedit.msc is not working either, tried a straight regedit too.

I am looking specifically to add a network path to the "other places" pain....

thoughts? Other tweaks other then tweakUI?

Tom

They don't work, because they modify a totally different thing. Both those options (TweakUi, and regedit) modify the Common Places bar that can be found in the "Save as" and "Open File" common Dialogs in windows.

Anyway I don't believe its in any direct or semi direct way possible to modify the Other Places section in the Common Tasks Pane in Windows Explorer.

There are some discussions I found that seem to think that the shellview.dll contains that information. But editing a dll is not an easy thing to do.

And alternative however is to use the Links bar in Windows Explorer. Just drag and drop any folders you want a shortcut to to the Links bar and a shortcut is made, that will appear in all your Explorer Windows.

Nope, he's talking about the Other Places pane in Windows Explorer, not the Places Bar in the Open file dialogs as the OP explained.

The Places Bar above (Bar, not Pane) can be altered in many ways, the Other Places Pane(pane, not bar) seems to be unreachable.

thanks Vacunita, for clearing that one up...

having a foreign language version does not help at times... ;-)

and I believe that is hard-coded into the shell32.dll file...

and for that you would need a program like: Restorator or ResourceHacker (no longer developed)...

tell me about it. Its one thing I love about Windows 7. The ability to easily install language packs.
