XP Pro slow off domain

I've got an XP pro laptop which runs fine when connected to my domain at work, but off the domain runs very slow.
Right click an icon and it locks up, try and open notepad and it locks up, generally anything involving windows explorer is not happy off the domain.
Im assuming its some networking issue, but cannot find out what.
any ideas?

Doesn't sound like a third party issue. Have you tried running a network monitoring program to view network throughput? Perhaps there is extreme packet loss, which could either be attributed to a faulty piece of hardware or media.
