Hello everyone. :)

I am using Windows XP Professional and I have noticed that when browsing to any computer folders on my LAN, there is about a 10 second delay before it displays the files, whereas if I browse to the same machines using Windows 98 the folders display contents almost instantly.

I have read most every tip I can find on the web for speeding up network browsing, but none seem to have solved this problem.

Granted, this is only a minor nusiance, but I like to think that there is a solution to everything. :)

Has anyone ever dealt with this issue and found a genuine resolution to speed up network browsing?

Appreciate any feedback that you all can give!

Cheers!

Open up the Registry and go to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

Under that branch, select the key :

{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

Right click it and select "Delete".

Unfortunately, that particular one I have tried and it didn't really help.

But thank you for the post! :)

Next, disable Web Client service.

You can use MSCONFIG, or right-click My Computer, Manage, Services, Services, scroll down. Disable, and then stop.

Next, try two more registry entries. One to increase lanman buffers; the second to increase the disconnect to share timer:

1. Increase directory buffers on shares:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters]

Add the new key:
"SizReqBuf"=dword:0000ffff

2. Prevent reconnection delays:
It is possible to configure a timeout for LAN connections (as with the Remote Access Service) after which idle time the connection will be closed, if you then try and use it the connection will be reconnected, this will be invisible to you but you will experience a slight delay.

By default this is 15 minutes however it can be changed by directly editing the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

Double click autodisconnect

Set to decimal and set the number of minutes (from -1 to 4294967295). Try 500 minutes which should be enough
Click OK, and close the registry editor
Reboot the machine

First check your DNS settings
if you have a local DNS server on your network you should be using that for name resolution if not then you are useing WINS for name resolution you need to do the following

my network placeses>properties>LAN>properties>IP>properties>Advance>WINS tab>enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP checked

XP looks to DNS first for resolution and if you do not use local DNS it times out to WINS/NETBIOS (your 10 sec delay)
this should speed up the processes

best of luck

Thanks for posts everyone, but unfortunately I still have a 3-5 second delay for a directory displaying 1000+ files in the directory. I also realize that is a lot of files, however, this ONLY occurs when I browse from a Windows 2K or XP machine and using the Windows 98 to browse to the same computer directory across the network it displays the files in under a second.

Maybe there isn't a true fix, it could just be the nature of the operating systems and the drivers for the NIC's.

If anyone else has any suggestions, I'd be happy to try them out. :)

If not, thanks for the input and I'll see you all around the forums...

Cheers!
