I have an XP Pro installation with SP1a. I want to upgrade my mobo and processor, but in doing so, I will not be able to boot up into XP because the old mobo has a different chipset (VIA KT266A) than the new one (VIA KM400+8237).

I will need to perform a repair installation in order to do this, since I am not inclined to reinstall all of the programs again.

My questions are 1) Has anyone done this to upgrade the mobo and is it stable or is it frought with problems? I know that most would recommend reinstalling from scratch, but I don't want that kind of hassle right now.

2) My XP Pro install disk is pre-SP1. I know I will need to reinstall the service packs and updates again, but will I encouter any other problems because my install disk is older than my current OS? I don't have any partitions larger than 120GB, but should I slipstream the install anyway?

See these two articles. While written for Win2k everything applies to XP, and this way you do not have to worry about losing service packs and hotfixes:

If you should choose a repair install, consider just doing an XP Service Pack 2 upgrade when finished. All previous service packs and hotfixes are included, so there is no need to worry about Service Pack 1.
