I have three computers in a lan. The router is a netgear br814 version 3. All the computers can ping each other and can see each other in the network window. They are on the same workgroup. Microsoft file and sharing protocol is installed on all of them.

There are absolutely no firewalls or virus scanners enabled or installed on any of the three machines.

Simple file sharing is disabled on the xp pro box. I disabled the guest account because it would not even bring up a login box to access the xp machine.

The local ip's are:
192.168.0.2 xp pro (ntfs) has a username but no password to login to the computer.
192.168.0.3 vista home (ntfs) has a username and password to login to the computer.
192.168.0.4 win98se (fat32) has absolutely nothing. And I wish to keep it this way.

The message I get is "\\computername is not accessible.
Login failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

The version of winxp pro is version 2002 service pak 2.

Any help is appreciated.

Add the Vista username to XP's Local Users group (Right-click My Computer, Manage, Local Users and Groups, Users)

vista has the same user name as xp pro, xp doesnt have the password though!
And what do I do about win98se?

Searching on "Login failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer" brings a lot of hits.

Some hits refer to Local Policies setting Log on locally The setting I have are groups: Administrators, Backup Operators, Guest, Power Users, Users

Other hits described using the NTRights utility from Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit ( From a Coomand Prompt:

net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

I can't vouch for either method, but the first can be verified if you are running XP Professional.

Accessing Vista from 98 might be a lost cause, it is not really a supported scenario for Vista.

Accessing XP from 98, to connect, set XP for Simple File Sharing. Turn on the Guest Account.

Have a look at these sort of Policies.
Have a look at the settings and set them to your needs.

The Everyone group must be present in "Access this computer from the network"
Deny access to this computer from the Network - remove guests.
Log on Locally - add Everyone group.

Simple File Sharing- enabled

Simple File Sharing - disabled
