Hi all,

I want to ask how many processes do you have running on XP Pro right now?? Which processes should be running? Also what services are not needed? Can i disable the unneeded ones of should i set them to manual?

Sweetme (Montreal, Quebec) No i'm not

According to the Task Manager this machine is running some 40 processes without showing any problems.

I use to worry about disabling Services when XP first came out now I'm happy to let them run at the SP2 default. In these days with Gigabytes of RAM and fast processors I don't think this is so important.

I would however use the MsConfig tool to look at any non-Microsoft Services which you may be running. If you do decide to disable some Services make sure you do it through the Services snap-in, don't disable them through MsConfig.

The processes you have running depend highly on what's installed on your computer. Drivers for hardware sometimes include utilities to "enhance" your experience with them. You may have utilities installed that I don't. It's impossible to say what is needed and what isn't without knowing you or at least seeing the process list. But even in seeing the process list, you may not realize that lxpmgr.exe is for your printer and if we tell you to kill it, you kill some parts of functionality to your printer.

You can adjust the Windows default services, but after that... there's little we'll be able to quickly and easily help you with, I expect.

Here's a site detailing the Windows Services and recommended settings for a variety of usage.
